DeKUT and KPLC Partner to Advance IoT-Based Power Fault Management

DeKUT, through the Centre for Development of Electronic Devices (CDED), is collaborating with Kenya Power & Lighting Company PLC (KPLC), through its Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR), in the implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT) Project involving the supply and delivery of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs) and other accessories.
Through this collaboration, DeKUT and KPLC have co-designed an IoT device to support KPLC’s Operations and Maintenance (O&M) teams in the detection, localization, and control of faults on power supply lines.
The deployment of these devices is expected to improve the response time of KPLC personnel to faults, thereby reducing power outage duration and overall network downtime. This will enhance the reliability of electricity supply to customers while minimizing potential financial losses to KPLC arising from prolonged interruptions in power supply.
The KPLC team was led by Eng. Henry Pwani, alongside Eng. Dr. Patrick Karimi, Eng. Faith Mercy Gicugu, Eng. John Njangi, Eng. Eric Ubaga, and Eng. Japhet Ndunda whereas the DeKUT team was led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eng. Peter N. Muchiri, EBS, alongside Dr. Tanui, Managing Director, DeKUT Enterprises (DeKUTES), Dr. Ollengo, Director, Research, Innovation and Management and Community Linkages (RIMCL), and Mr. Julius Karanja, Director, Center for Development of Electronic Devices (CDED).
The partnership underscores the commitment of both institutions to advancing technological innovation and developing practical solutions that contribute to improved electricity supply reliability and enhanced service delivery.
